P02 – Mariana Gonzalez e Teresa Fernandes, You May Also Like_

In 2011, Eli Pariser presented to the audience of TEDtalks his concern with a web that, in an attempt of speed and efficiency, closes us in our own perspectives and ends up isolating each individual in his own world. To this state of intellectual and ideological isolation caused by personalization algorithms Pariser called “filter bubble“.
In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election, this topic comes up again showing how filter bubbles affect social relations and why it’s important to relate to people who have different perspectives from our own.
The project You may also like_ aims not only to expose the possible implications of the filter bubbles on our personal relationships and on the construction of each one as an individual, but also offers tangible solutions to each person’s “escape” through a categorized list of online tools (websites, search engines, browse extensions) that limit the data that is collected, thus inhibiting the transmission of said information to third parties and directing results according to the activity register online.
Our visual identity has remained simplistic and modern, based on full and geometric shapes using a palette of neutral colors (grey, black and white) to which we added red, to stress the impact of the matter. Our graphical intervention consisted in building a website, where there is a list of about 20 tools (collected by us) divided into 4 categories (search engines, news, multi-purpose and awareness).
The exhibition consisted in two separated projections that show a simulation of two users in a search engine, complemented by 10 two-faced cards, each one with a quote about the issue from Eli Pariser, the primary author in which we based our research.
